Paradise Brew 8/28: Working For The Weekend
Today, we're serving up a heckuva start for volleyball.
Good morning. Need some Monday Motivation? Here’s Coach Dusty May absolutely bringing it as Grand Marshall at the Daytona International Speedway over the weekend. The coffee hasn’t even finished yet, and we already feel like we’re on our third cup.
What else did we throw into today’s Brew?
🏐 Double victory weekend
⚽ Four scored in the Music City
🦉 And much, much more!

🔼 Working For The Weekend. After splitting their first two matches, FAU volleyball hammered home a dominant four-setter over FDU yesterday to take home two victories in this weekend’s FAU Invitational.
Arianna Beckham had a breakout game for the Owls, recording a new career-best 15 kills and hitting an astounding .632 in the match—adding five digs and tied for a team-best three blocks. Madison Dyer also posted a standout performance with a team second-best 13 kills and hitting .417 in the match, while also adding a trio of blocks. Noelle Stephens and Victoria Hensley split setting duties, tallying 27 assists and 23 assists respectively, while Isabelle Northam notched a season-best 19 digs.
The Owls will have a short turnaround this weekend as they prepare to head down to Coral Gables tonight to take on Miami inside the Knight Complex. First serve is set for 6:00pm ET.
🔼 Four Scored. After last week’s fireworks show six-goal performance against Lipscomb (RV), FAU men’s soccer secured the draw against Belmont last night thanks to Victor Claudel scoring a late equalizer off a pass from Tom Abrahamsson. That’s four points through a pair of Music City matches to start the season undefeated. Up next? Marist comes to town on Friday night and the Owls look to continue their no loss ways. Kickoff is at 7:00pm ET sharp.
🔼 Clean As A Whistle. Florida Atlantic women's soccer kept a clean sheet and earned its first win of 2023 with a 3-0 triumph over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi yesterday.
Sloane Young opened the scoring with her first goal as an Owl in the 15th minute. From the left side of the Islanders' penalty area, Morgan McDonald drove a hard cross to the back post where Sloane Young was waiting to tap it home. The Owls added a second goal just before halftime as Drew Dempsey drew a foul just outside the top of the penalty area and redirected Kayla Siddiqi's free kick into the top left corner for her first goal of the season.
It took just 10 minutes into the second half for Elin Simonardottir to complete the scoring with her third goal of the season—Olivia Bori eluded multiple defenders down the right side and sent a cross to the back post, Molly Setsma corralled it from there, and the Owls' sophomore from Iceland was waiting to finish it off just in front of goal.

🤔 PARADISE TRIVIA
High five. In their history, FAU football has churned out some very productive quarterbacks—but there have only been five times in which an Owl has passed for five touchdowns in a single game.
Rusty Smith is on the list three times with five-touchdown performances against Minnesota and Memphis in 2007, and against FIU in 2008.
Who are the other two quarterbacks to throw for five touchdowns in a single game? (Bonus points if you remember the opponents!)
