Paradise Brew 12/18: The Best Offense is a Good Defense

A killer defensive performance by the No. 15 FAU Owls secures the win over St. Bonaventure.

Good morning. The No. 15 Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team (9-2) captured the victory in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, taking down St. Bonaventure (7-3) by a score of 64-54 on Saturday afternoon.

It was a top-notch defensive performance for the relentless Owls, who turned a double-digit deficit into a double-digit victory after forcing a season-high 21 turnovers.

“We are excited to head back home with a victory that we think will stand the test of time and help us throughout the season," said head coach Dusty May.

🔼 Bye Bye, Bonnies. "I'd like to shout out Brenen Lorient, he made several hustle plays when the game was still undecided,” said head coach Dusty May after the hard-fought win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday. “[Bryan] Greenlee's on-ball defense and then Giancarlo Rosado started both runs in each half. And then obviously, we are excited about having Nick Boyd back and a full roster, the first time we had that in a while.”

Like many games, the Owls struck first on the opening possession, with Brandon Weatherspoon knocking in a triple. However, a double-digit deficit in the first half had them in unfamiliar territory.

"It takes time to get used to how they play, what they do,” said junior center Vlad Goldin. “After we adjusted, we just took what the game gave us."

Some quick hits from the game:

  • Junior guard Johnell Davis finished an all-around game leading the team in points (16), rebounds (nine), and assists (four)

  • Goldin, the nation's leader in field goal percentage, has not missed a shot in two games to up his season total to 76%. Against the Bonnies, he scored 11 points on 4-4 shooting

  • All nine Owls who entered the game scored a field goal

The Owls will be in Las Vegas on Saturday, Dec. 23, to go head-to-head with No. 1-ranked Arizona (9-1). Tip-off will be at 3pm ET, and the game will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

🔼 This Smarts. Florida Atlantic women's basketball (4-5) just couldn't get the ball to fall in the final moments as the Owls fell 46-45 against the Howard Bison (2-10) on Saturday at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

"Obviously, a really tough loss. I'm hurting for our team,” said head coach Jennifer Sullivan of losing the game by one point. “I think these experiences, we told them in there, are good for us because I think when we get these opportunities again, we will capitalize. But it doesn't make the pain they feel right now any better or worse.”

Some quick hits from the game:

  • Mya Perry turned in her fifth double-figure performance of the season, scoring a game-high 19 points, shooting 46 percent (6-of-13) from the field, 63 percent (5-of-8) from 3-point range, and a perfect 100 percent (2-of-2) from the line, while also adding a career-best eight rebounds.

  • Jada Moore scored 10 points, shooting 33 percent (4-of-12) from the field, also adding seven rebounds.

  • Janeta Rozentale led the Owls on the glass, tying for a game-high 11 rebounds, in addition to adding a pair of blocks and two assists.

  • Florida Atlantic held a huge advantage in points off turnovers, outscoring Howard 16-7, and they dominated from beyond the arc, outscoring the Bison 38 percent to 23 percent from deep.

The Owls will hit the road on Monday as they head to Orlando, Florida, to face off against Big 12 foe UCF for a 2pm ET tip-off inside Addition Financial Arena and on ESPN+.

🔼 Strong Sneaker Game?   D.O.N.s for the Beach Boys! After an impressive rivalry win Wednesday night, head coach Dusty May had a postgame surprise for the Owls.

Florida Atlantic was chosen by four-time NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell as the program to wear his new Adidas D.O.N. 5 shoes.
