Paradise Brew 2/14: Sweet 16

Monday marked the 16th week FAU men's hoops has remained in the AP Top 25 poll

Good morning. For the 16th consecutive week, the Florida Atlantic's men's basketball team (19-5, 9-2 AAC) remains ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, coming in at No. 24. This marks the 10th longest streak in the nation.

The Owls remain in elite company with the top teams in the nation, tied with No. 5 Houston for the most wins in the nation (54) since the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign. With 19 victories this season, only five other teams in the top 25 have more wins than FAU.

Florida Atlantic returns to the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena tomorrow to face Temple (8-16, 1-10 AAC). They will then travel in-state to Tampa on Sunday, Feb. 18, to face South Florida (17-5, 10-1 AAC), currently the number-one team in the American Conference.

🔼 A Mean Valentine’s Day. Florida Atlantic women's basketball closes out a two-game homestand tonight as the Owls (8-15, 3-9 AAC) host the North Texas Mean Green (18-5, 8-3 AAC) for their red-out game. Tip-off is at 7pm ET inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

Florida Atlantic leads the all-time series between the Owls and the Mean Green, 11-10, including a 6-2 advantage when playing in Boca Raton. The Owls are on a two-game skid against North Texas, which includes an 86-52 defeat earlier this season on Jan. 7, 2024.

FAU women's basketball will head back out on the road this weekend as they visit Sunshine State rival USF on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tipoff is set for 7pm ET inside the Yuengling Center.

🔼 No Flash in the Pan. Florida Atlantic freshman Panna Bartha has been named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

While the honor is a weekly award, Bartha's college debut has been perfect, and that includes last week. She was 4-0 in last week's competitions. The true freshman from Hungary won her court #3 doubles match versus host and fellow AAC member South Florida 6-4 and her court #1 singles match 7-5, 6-3. The following day, she and Amber McGinnins clinched the doubles point for the Owls with a court #3 7-5 victory over the AAC's North Texas. Then Bartha went to work capturing court #1 6-1, 6-4.

On the season, the freshman is 7-0 in singles play, all on court #1, and has been forced to a third set just once. She holds a 4-2 doubles record playing with three different partners.

Bartha will lead the Owls this weekend against South Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10am ET at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center.

🔼 May Day. Florida Atlantic men's basketball head coach Dusty May held his weekly press conference on Monday, meeting with the media to discuss the No. 24 Owls, who face Temple on Thursday evening.

“We’re still not clicking on all cylinders, but we think we’re not far off,” May said. “They [Temple] shoot a lot of threes…they’re obviously getting better, and they’re very capable…we know it’s going to be a challenge. We’re not taking that game lightly.”

Florida Atlantic (19-5, 9-2 AAC) is coming off a two-game road trip where both games went to overtime. The Owls split on the week and returned with a victory against Wichita State.

The Owls are now in second place in the American Athletic Conference standings.

🔼 May Day, Part Two. The Florida Atlantic Coaches Show, presented by Duffy's Sports Grill, continues this week by featuring men's basketball head coach Dusty May and assistant coach Todd Abernethy, as well as senior guard Bryan Greenlee. Fans are encouraged to attend the show at Duffy’s on St. Andrews Boulevard in Boca Raton tonight at 5pm ET.

The group will discuss the Owls' season to date and preview this Thursday's contest versus Temple, scheduled for 7pm ET at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
