Paradise Brew 10/20: Same Records, Different Birds
Today, the Owls come home to roost.
Good morning. Florida Atlantic is hosting UTSA tomorrow for Homecoming at 6 p.m. and while these two programs may be birds of a different feather—both teams have the same record, they’re both younger than 25 years old, and both were started from scratch under the direction of former Miami head coaches.
The difference? A crushing Owls defense. FAU offense also showed up in force last week vs. USF. Let’s do this thing.

🔼 No Empty Nest. Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season is in the books, with six former FAU greats seeing action, proving once again that the Owls who fly the nest are ultra-successful. Here's a rundown of how each performed during Week 6:
Active Owls (6)
#2 Azeez Al-Shaair | LB | Tennessee Titans
- Al-Shaair followed up a career week with more of the same. Playing against the Baltimore Ravens in London, he notched 15 tackles for the second week in a row. Five of them came in the red zone, helping Tennessee's defense hold Baltimore to mostly field goals, though they came up short by a score of 24-16. Al-Shaair is currently sixth in the NFL in tackles, and at this pace, he will keep rising.
Titans' Record: 2-4
Next Game: Al-Shaair will have a well-deserved weekend of rest for Tennessee's bye week. They will regroup on Oct. 29 for a home game against the Atlanta Falcons.
#88 Harrison Bryant | TE | Cleveland Browns
- Bryant and an energized Cleveland team returned from their bye week with a massive 19-17 victory over the previously unbeaten San Francisco 49ers. Bryant himself played 27 offensive snaps, marking his fourth out of fifth game playing at least 25. He also added eight on special teams.
Browns' Record: 3-2
Next Game: at Indianapolis – Sunday, 1 p.m. (CBS)
#91 Trey Hendrickson | DE | Cincinnati Bengals
- Another game, another sack. The two-time Pro Bowler is now up to seven on the season, tied for third-most in the NFL and only one behind the top two. He made his mark in run defense as well, racking up a career-high three tackles for loss. Thanks to Hendrickson's leadership on the defensive line, the Bengals took the tight 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Bengals' Record: 3-3
Next Game: Hendrickson and the Bengals will enjoy the bye week before their next game on Oct. 29 against the San Francisco 49ers.

🏅 FAU’s Daniel Richardson has been voted as the week seven Manning Award Quarterback of the Week, winning this over seven other nominees!
🔼 Beneath The Owls’ Burrow. FAU football is riding a two-game winning streak and sits at 2-0 in the AAC. The team standing in front of them? UTSA and their 10-game win streak in regular season conference games.
But the Owls have their own secret weapons.
FAU is expected to be led by current AAC Offensive Player of the Week, Daniel Richardson. Last week, the Miami native completed 31 of 38 passes for a career-high 382 yards and three touchdowns against one interception to help Florida Atlantic break open what had been a one-score game at halftime. His efforts guided what turned into a 56-14 victory over host USF. The FAU offense scored the final 35 points of the game.
The running back room is led by a duo of backs averaging more than five yards per carry. Senior Larry McCammon III has tallied 442 yards on 81 carries (5.5 per carry), while graduate Kobe Lewis has carried the ball 37 times for a total of 210 yards (5.7 per carry).
FAU's offense is sparked by the play of junior LaJohntay Wester, who is averaging 103.67 yards per game and a nation-leading 10.3 receptions per game. He is the only player in the country with double-digit receptions per game and has reached the milestone in four of six 2023 games. Last week, the wide receiver room proved they have more than one weapon, with redshirt sophomore Tony Johnson and junior Devin Price pulling their weight and then some. Johnson is averaging 11.91 yards per catch, and Price averages a team-leading 12.50 yards per catch.
🔼 Friday Night Lights… But Make It Soccer. Florida Atlantic men's soccer (3-6-3, 2-4 AAC) hosts No. 14 FIU (8-2-3, 4-0-1 AAC) on Friday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium. The Owls currently hold the AAC's sixth and final postseason tournament spot with two conference matches left in the regular season.
The Owls are essentially in a battle for the sixth and final playoff spot with Temple and USF (both of whom have a game at hand on the Owls).
If the Owls can get three points against either FIU or USF, they would move to 9 points. USF would likely need to win out at that point. Temple's remaining schedule is a gauntlet: at Memphis (currently 4th place) vs. Tulsa (5th place) and at SMU (2nd place).
Goalkeeper Rotem Fadida leads the AAC in saves and saves per game. He's played every minute of every game this season.
📆 Up next, the Owls will celebrate senior night on Tuesday with a non-conference matchup against FGCU. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm ET
