Paradise Brew 11/10: Ramblers in the Dust

Today, we applaud FAU men's hoops for never trailing in their season-opening win.

Good morning. The No. 10 Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team (1-0) tipped off their 2023-24 campaign with a convincing 75-62 victory over Loyola Chicago (0-1) in Wednesday's Barstool Invitational.

While the Owls are ready to turn the page from last year's success and embrace the now, their championship tenacity remained on display with a hot shooting night and a dominating defensive performance. It was all Florida Atlantic all night, with the Owls never trailing during the entire game.

🔼 May’s Mindset. Florida Atlantic men’s basketball coach Dusty May savors last year’s historic run but is also ready to turn the page.

"Last year was a special season, but as a coach, as a program, and as a group of players chasing their individual goals and dreams, it was nice to just move on to the next chapter and see what this team can become,” May noted.

While it’s early, that next chapter is already looking promising. Here are some highlights from Wednesday’s season opener against Loyola Chicago:

  • The Owls’ strong shooting started in the first half, with 51% from the field and 50% from downtown, sparking offensive success.

  • Goldin's 19 points ties his career high, while his five blocks and four steals were both new career highs. He added 10 rebounds to his stat line to give him the double-double.

  • Four Owls finished the night with double-figure points: Vladislav Goldin (19), Nick Boyd (13), Brandon Weatherspoon (12), and Johnell Davis (12).

  • The team took advantage of the Ramblers’ turnovers, scoring 27 off of them compared to Loyola Chicago scoring just five.

Fans will get their first chance to pack the Elly on Tuesday, Nov. 14, for Florida Atlantic's home opener against Eastern Michigan. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm ET.

🔼 Pirates in Paradise. There are just two home games remaining on the 2023 football schedule, which means there are only two more Boca Raton opportunities to watch the most prolific wide receiver in program history do what he does best. This Saturday at 4 p.m., LaJohntay Wester—a 2023 Biletnikoff and Paul Hornung Award candidate—will lead the Florida Atlantic University Owls when they play host to Eastern Carolina University.

Florida Atlantic (4-5, 3-2 AAC) will welcome ECU (1-8, 0-5 AAC) to Paradise for the first time. The two teams previously met in 2013. While ECU came away with the 31-13 victory in the Owls' first Conference USA contest, it would be the last year for the Pirates in C-USA. This meeting will be the first as an American Athletic Conference foe.

🔼 For All Intents and Purposes. Florida Atlantic University women's basketball head coach Jennifer Sullivan has announced five signees to National Letters of Intent as the first signees of the Owls 2024 signing class.

"We are thrilled to be adding this talented group to our roster next year," said Sullivan. "These five athletes bring a variety of skills, size, and the intangibles that we want in our program. In addition to their basketball abilities, these young women are wonderful people that come from amazing families. They are great students that will be difference-makers in our FAU community."

🔼 Straight Reppin’. The American Athletic Conference men's soccer league announced its all-conference teams on Wednesday, and the Owls certainly left their mark. Florida Atlantic was represented three times, led by graduate senior Tom Abrahamsson on the first team. Victor Claudel was named to the second team, while Oliver Moller-Jensen earned his place on the all-rookie team.

Read the full article for more on Abrahamsson’s record number of starts, Claudel’s 17 points to lead the team, and Moller-Jensen’s thrilling goal in his very first game that set the stage for this accolade.
