Paradise Brew 5/8: A Tournament Champion

Plus: Beating Power 4 teams.

Good Morning, FAU Fam.

What else do we have mixed into today’s Brew? Check it out below!

🏆 A Tournament Champion
✈️ From Belgium to Boca
🦉 And much, much more

🔼 Walk It Off. FAU softball walked off a come-from-behind win at the American Conference Championship last night, downing Charlotte, 5-4. Charlotte led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Owls answered with four runs to knot the game. After a scoreless top of the seventh, Jesiana Mora delivered the game-winning run to send the Owls to the next round. FAU takes on top-seeded South Florida this afternoon at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

🔼 Pivotal Showdown. Florida Atlantic baseball heads to Wichita for a crucial weekend series with both teams knotted at 10-11 in the American Conference and fighting for positioning with six league games left. The Owls ride a four-series winning streak and come off head coach John McCormack's 600th career victory last Friday. John Martinez has been swinging a hot bat with six doubles and nine RBI over the last 10 games, while reliever Brayden Gilson has been lights-out with a 0.77 ERA across five appearances. Wichita State enters on a four-game skid after getting swept by UTSA. First pitch tonight is 7 p.m. ET.

🔼 A Tournament Champion. Florida Atlantic's NaShawn Tyson won the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, closing with a 67 to finish at 10-under and win by three shots. Tyson held the lead wire-to-wire after back-to-back 68s in the first two rounds, then stayed cool under pressure when Delaware's Arsit Areephun made a late charge with an eagle on 16. Tyson answered with a birdie at 17 and got up-and-down for birdie on 18 to seal it. It's the second career victory for the junior, who also qualified for an NCAA Regional last season.

🔼 Runner-Up Finish. Florida Atlantic's Carolin Alblas capped her season with a runner-up finish at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, carding a final-round 70 with four birdies. The graduate senior from Germany finished at 7-over for the tournament, five shots behind champion Alexis Faieta of UNC-Wilmington. It's the best finish of the season for the former three-time NAIA All-American at Keiser.

🔼 From Belgium to Boca. Daniel Laureyssens is one of 76 Florida Atlantic student-athletes crossing the stage this spring in a cap and gown. The Belgium native arrived in the United States with no clear plan, just a desire to keep swimming. What followed was one of the most decorated careers in FAU history. The senior holds school records in nine events, earned ASUN Male Most Outstanding Swimmer honors this season with five conference gold medals, and helped the men's team capture its first conference championship. Laureyssens became the first male Owl since 2006 to qualify for the NCAA Championships, competing in both the 50 and 200 freestyle, and was named FAU's Student Athlete of the Year for his work in the classroom as an international business major. After graduation, he'll return to Belgium to compete at nationals with an eye on the European Championships and, eventually, the Olympic stage.

🔼 Welcome to Paradise. Florida Atlantic men's tennis added Jose David Segovia Perez, a Venezuelan transfer from Saint Leo who brings an 18-1 singles record in 2026 and ITA rankings of No. 2 in singles and No. 3 in doubles. The Valencia native holds three singles titles and five doubles titles and trained at IMG Academy before college. He joins the Owls this August with a UTR of 12.61 and an ITF junior ranking of 319.

If a Florida Atlantic baseball player hits a grand slam in the 4th inning during one of the selected home games, one lucky fan will win $15,000 toward the lease or purchase of a brand new car from Phil Smith Acura or Phil Smith Kia.
