Paradise Brew 2/5: Women in Sports Request a Word

Today is National Girls and Women in Sports Day, and the FAU WBB team hits the road for a pair of AAC contests, starting tonight against Wichita State.

Good morning, Owls Family. Today is National Girls and Women in Sports Day (more on that below), which feels like it carries more meaning this year than ever before. From Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese to Coco Gauff and Nelly Korda, women’s sports have grabbed the spotlight and, quite frankly, changed the game.

It’s only fitting that the Owls WBB team heads back on the road this week, with a pair of AAC road trips to Wichita State for a 7 p.m. ET tipoff tonight before closing out the two-game road stretch in Memphis against the Memphis Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 8 (3 p.m.).

FAU heads into this week's two-game road stretch at 10-13 overall and 2-8 in AAC play.

What else do we have mixed into today’s Brew? Check it out below!

🦉 And much, much more

🔼 Paving the Way. In celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we honor the remarkable female athletes who have paved the way for future generations of athletes and coaches. One such inspiring figure is Jordan Clark, head coach of the FAU softball team. With her passion, resilience, and relentless drive for success, Clark stands as a powerful example of women in sports, both through her coaching achievements and playing career.

Clark's journey to where she is today begun with a deep love for competition. From an early age, she was driven to be the best at everything she did, whether in school, on the softball field, or in any other area.

Go here for more on Clark’s path to collegiate softball, her message to young girls and what led her to coaching.

🔼 Time to Weather the Storm. Florida Atlantic has announced its second annual "Sandstorm" game, which is set for Monday, Feb. 10, when the MBB team hosts Charlotte at the Elly. The game, part of ESPN's Big Monday package, airs nationally on ESPN2 at 9 p.m.

The team is set to wear its special sand-colored Adidas jerseys. FAU enjoys one of the most electric home-court environments in the country, and the annual "Sandstorm" game is both a nod to the Elly's unique atmosphere and its paradise location.

🔼 Owls and Ospreys and Birdies, Oh My. FAU Women's Golf (+20) finished 13th at the Paradise Invitational on Tuesday. The Falcon and Raven courses at Osprey Point GC provided a challenging test for a field featuring four teams ranked inside the Top 50 in Division I entering the week.

Amelia Cobb delivered the Owls' low round on Tuesday with an even-par 72. The freshman played steady, mistake-free golf in all three rounds for the week, leading the field in pars with 46 (in 54 holes). She moved up 15 spots, balancing two birdies with two bogeys in route to a tie for 41st.

🔼 Strokes of Genius. The Florida Atlantic swimming & diving teams continue to excel outside the swimming pool under the direction of Head Coach Lara Preacco and staff.

For the seventh consecutive semester, both the women's and men's teams were named Scholar All-American by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). In order to do so, a team must achieve a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 for the semester of Fall 2024. The Owl women tallied a GPA of 3.584, followed closely behind by the men's team recording 3.272 GPA.

🔼 A Not-So-Soft Launch. The FAU softball team kicks off their 2025 season by hosting the Paradise Classic tomorrow through Sunday, Feb. 9, with the squad playing their first six games. FAU opens their regular season against Ole Miss tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. ET, followed by an outing against Kansas right after at 7 p.m.

The Owls will take Joan Joyce Field at FAU Softball Stadium for the first time since winning the AAC regular season championship in their debut campaign as a member of the league. A ring ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, at noon will honor the 2024 squad that made the program's first NCAA Regional appearance since 2016. Alumni of the team from years' past will be in attendance and recognized throughout the weekend.

🔼 A Little Birdie Told Us. The FAU men's golf team (-11) finished in third place at the Sea Best Invitational on Tuesday. Graduate senior Guilherme Grinberg posted a career-best tie for third to lead the way individually. Grinberg bounced back from a shaky start to play his final 15 holes in three-under, including three straight birdies at the 6th, 7th, and 8th holes.

Freshman Biagio Gagliardi also rebounded from a tough start. He played his final 13 holes in five-under, including an eagle-two at the par-four 14th hole, ultimately landing his third consecutive Top 10 finish (ninth place).

🔼 Stars On the Rise. The FAU MBB team has earned multiple weekly honors from the AAC following a week of back-to-back home wins at the Elly. Center Matas Vokietaitis has won Freshman of the Week, while graduate guard KyKy Tandy has been named an AAC Honorable Mention.

This marks the fourth freshman of the week honor for Vokietaitis, who averaged 15 points on 75% shooting from the field, first with a perfect 4-4 outing for 12 points in the Owls' 94-74 win against UTSA on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tandy, who was named on the preseason All-Conference Second Team, has been awarded his first in-season weekly honor after having a three-point explosion in the team's takedown of the Roadrunners.

🔼 No One-Dimensional Owls. FAU Athletics has named its Prestige Windows & Doors Student-Athletes of the Month for January with men's tennis player Simon Myslivec and Maria Myklebust from women's basketball receiving the honors. This marks Myklebust's second honor after previously earning it in August.

After finishing last semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Simon has carried that success into the current semester, with straight A’s. Maria has gotten off to a fantastic start this semester, with A’s in every one of her classes so far, despite taking on a heavier course load.

🔼 Rattlers in Paradise. Florida Atlantic Football has announced the Owls will host Florida A&M next season at Flagler Credit Union Stadium. The game, set for Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, completes FAU's non-conference football schedule. The AAC slate will be announced at a later date.

The Owls previously announced non-conference games at Maryland on Saturday, Aug. 30, at FIU in the annual Shula Bowl on Saturday, Sept. 13, and hosting Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 22.

🔼 No. 8 The Great. Stefanie Ingram has been recognized as an AAC Weekly Honorable Mention honoree. The award marks the Owls' eighth weekly award this season and Ingram's first career AAC honor.

Ingram had a career week, leading the Owls on the road at Tulane and in a 66-61 win at home against the Rice Owls. She averaged an impressive 20 points per game, shooting 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field, 43 percent (6-of-14) from beyond the arc, and 100 percent (2-of-2) from the line. She also added nine assists, seven rebounds, and a steal over the Owls' two contests.

🔼 Swinging For the Fences. It was another successful event for FAU Baseball season ticket holders, getting us even more excited for the season to start.
