🏊 Sweeping the Champs
🦉 And much, much more

🔼 One for the Record Book. Easton Messer scored five touchdowns to tie the Florida Atlantic single-game record as the Owls outlasted Rice 51-49 on Saturday, surviving a 55-yard field goal attempt in the final minute. Messer became the only FBS player in the last 20 seasons to post two rushing touchdowns, two receiving touchdowns, and a punt return score in the same game, finishing with 262 all-purpose yards and an 82-yard punt return that stands as the longest in program history. Caden Veltkamp threw for 339 yards and three scores, passing Chris Robison for sole possession of second in program history with nine 300-yard games, as FAU won its fourth straight at home.

The turnaround is quick, with the Owls traveling to Denton for a Thursday night game at North Texas at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, the first of two straight Thursday outings.

🔼 All the Way Back. Florida Atlantic volleyball dropped the first two sets to Memphis on Friday and then stormed back for a reverse sweep, closing the fifth set on a 9-1 run to win 15-8. Sara Gamboa was unstoppable with a season-best 21 kills on .486 hitting, Sequoia Layne added 14 and Libby Ashline matched a season high with 12 while hitting .556. Maya Van Heyst piled up a career-best 60 assists and 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the year as the Owls moved to 14-7 overall and 7-3 in the American.

🔼 Sweeping the Champs. Florida Atlantic swimming and diving took down the defending NAIA national champion Keiser Seahawks on both sides Friday, with the women rolling 216-84 and the men holding on 163-137. The Owls won 25 of the 32 events on the day, led by Talitha McEwan’s double in the 200 and 500 free and Nick Lugo’s wins in the 200 and 100 free. Both FAU squads are now a perfect 6-0 all-time against Keiser.

🔼 Scouts in the Seats. Major League Baseball scouts filled FAU Baseball Stadium on Saturday for the Owls’ annual scout day, watching 10 position players and 16 pitchers work through the 60-yard dash, defensive drills, batting practice, and an eight-inning intrasquad game with wood bats. Jaden Correa went deep twice and Troy Morrow collected four hits including a home run, while James Litman struck out two and touched 96 on the radar gun. The Owls head to Miami next Saturday, Oct. 31, for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

🔼 Pads Off. Graduate linebacker Zyere Horton, now in his fourth year with the Owls and recently off tying his career high with seven tackles against Texas Southern, talks everything but football with Frank Forte on last week’s “Inside the Owls’ Burrow.”
