Paradise Brew 8/21: Nolan Flyin'
Today, we're celebrating one of our own making a big debut in his first big league game.
Good morning. We haven’t even poured our first cup of coffee and we already have a case of the jitters. Feels like the first day of school for us too, so we'll introduce ourselves.
We’re the Paradise Brew—the first and only email newsletter about all things FAU Athletics.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning we’ll be coming straight to your inbox talking about what you care about. If you'd like to unsubscribe from this little bonus, you can easily do that at the bottom of this email.
And don't worry, if you unsubscribe it won't affect anything else related to your FAU Athletics account like important news, team-specific notifications, and ticket sale announcements.
So, without further ado, what are we serving up in today's Brew?
⚾ Nolan Schanuel’s big league debut
⚽ Preseason recognition for Tom Abrahamsson
🦉 And much, much more!
📈 STOCK UP
Stock Up is brought to you by Go Solar Power, providing a full suite of solar panels, EV chargers, air conditioning, hot water systems, and more designed specifically for quality and savings.
🔼 Nolan Flyin’. Shohei Ohtani isn’t the only one breaking records and doing things on the diamond that we haven’t seen in decades. On Friday night, former Owl Nolan Schanuel became the first non-pitcher to make their MLB debut by August of the same year they were drafted in the June Amateur Draft since 1978—or the same year that Grease was hitting theaters and the Bee Gees were winning Grammys.
So, what did Nolan do with his debut? Well… *deep inhale*
*deep exhale*
🔼 Kick Into High Gear. FAU men's soccer senior Tom Abrahamsson has been named to the AAC Preseason All-Conference team. It's the second consecutive season the defender has earned preseason recognition from the American.
Tom Abrahamsson started all 16 games in 2022. He registered two assists, but his biggest contributions came defensively, where he rarely came off the field from his right back position. The Swedish international played a team-high 1,291 minutes out of a possible 1,440.
🤔 PARADISE TRIVIA
Bird of prey. Congrats to Je’Quan Burton for being named to Bruce Feldman’s 2023 College football Freaks List published by The Athletic! Two big reasons for his inclusion? Production and potential.
He finished third on the team last year in receptions (33) and receiving yards (517) but there was one game last year that stood above the rest in terms of production for the senior redshirt.
Our question today—who was the opponent that Je’Quan Burton recorded his first 100-yard receiving game last season?
Think you've got it? Scroll on down to the bottom of this email for the answer!
🦉 ONE BIG THING
Helping hands. A culture shift—often an overused phrase—is applicable to this year’s FAU football team. Another phrase often used to describe the team's locker room is a group of guys who have bought in.
Both of those statements are evident when watching FAU practice as they help each other with teaching, hydration, encouragement, tackling, and has now extended that same character with helping to feed those in need.
