Paradise Brew 2/12: No Big Shocker
Men's hoops took the 95-82 victory after a physical game against the Wichita State Shockers
Good morning. In their second consecutive overtime game, the No. 20 Florida Atlantic men's basketball team (19-5, 9-2 AAC) came away with a 95-82 victory over Wichita State (10-14, 2-9 AAC) on Sunday afternoon.
The Owls relied on a balanced scoring attack with five scorers in double figures. Junior center Vlad Goldin tallied his third career game with 20 points, and senior guard Brandon Weatherspoon added 19 on 7-for-9 shooting.
"Our guys have the belief now that we have been in this situation so many times, and we have such a high level trust with each other. No one feels like they need to be our hero or save us; they just stay in the flow."
Florida Atlantic returns home to the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena on Thursday, Feb. 11. They are set to face Temple (8-15, 1-9 AAC) on ESPN2, tipping off at 7 p.m. EST.

🔼 Homerun, sweet homerun. A Zoey Jones three-run homer powered Florida Atlantic's softball team past Michigan State on Sunday morning by a 4-2 score.
The Owls (3-2) scattered three hits through the first five innings and used three pitchers to hold FAU within striking distance while waiting for the offense to find its momentum.
Presley Leebrick and Kiley Channell were the multiple-hit Owls, both going 2-for-3 on the day. Zoey Jones hit her second home run of the weekend and added three RBI to her totals, including the game-winner.
FAU will host its first mid-week game of the year on Tuesday at 4pm ET versus North Florida on Joan Joyce Field.
🔼 A Story to Love. Florida Atlantic men's tennis hit their third spot in four days and picked up their second 4-0 win in as many days, this time over Georgia State.
"Today was a strong performance from Alberto [Colas], Jiri [Jenicek], and JB [John Bernard] in singles," said FAU’s Director of Tennis Ricardo Gonzalez. They played some good tennis, stayed focused, and composed the entire way. We need to keep learning as a team. There is much more to keep improving upon."
The Owls will next play two matches on February 17th and 18th, facing Memphis and USF, respectively. Both teams are fellow American Athletic Conference members. However, the matches will count as regular-season competition only. Matches will be played at 1:30pm ET.
🔼 Courting Victory. Two road wins over American Athletic Conference opponents move the Florida Atlantic women's tennis team's record to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 on the road.
FAU got it started with doubles wins on courts two and three for the match's first point. Holding the 1-0 lead, the two teams moved into singles play. Freshman Panna Bartha continued to take college tennis by storm, downing her court one opponent 6-1, 6-4. Millie-Mae Matthews followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win, and Victoria Gomez O'Hayon clinched the match with a three-set win.
"The team showed resilience and a big fighting spirit," said assistant coach Maria Alvarez.
FAU will return home to play host to South Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m.
🔼 A Shocking Conclusion. The Florida Atlantic Owls (8-15, 3-9 AAC) couldn't overcome second-half struggles, dropping a 67-56 battle against the Wichita State Shockers (7-17, 3-9 AAC) on Play4Kay and Alumni Day Saturday at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
"Disappointing loss, but we will bounce back,” said head coach Jennifer Sullivan. Really excited about the space this team is in. We got a great North Texas team coming in next week. We will regroup and be ready to compete on Wednesday."
On a positive note, Allie Tylka tallied a season-best 16 points on 63 percent (5-of-8) from the field, 57 percent (4-of-7) from 3-point range, and finished with a perfect 2-of-2 at the line. She also added two rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
The Owls will close out their two-game homestand on Wednesday as they host the North Texas Mean Green for their Red Out game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm ET inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
🔼 Relaying Some Good News. The Florida Atlantic women's track & field team wrapped up their indoor regular season with a massive meet at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
The Owls held their own in races that showcased over 300 runners in some cases with several new personal bests and entries into the program's top 10 record books.
Read the article for more details on the finishes, including Jessica Lambert’s first time competing in the indoor season and Isabel O’Brien’s new personal best in the 5000m.
Now comes time for the Owls to prepare for their first American Athletic Indoor Championships. The meet will be held in Birmingham from Friday, Feb. 23, to Saturday, Feb. 24.
