FAU Men's Basketball names John Jakus, of Baylor and Gonzaga fame, as head coach
Good morning. John Jakus has been named the head men's basketball coach at Florida Atlantic. Go here for info on the press conference at Baldwin Arena today, where the official announcement will be made.
Jakus comes to Boca Raton after spending the last 12 seasons at Baylor and Gonzaga under two of the game's most successful head coaches: Baylor's Scott Drew and Gonzaga's Mark Few.
"When we began this search…the name that kept coming up with glowing reviews was John Jakus," said VP and Director of Athletics Brian White.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for what Dusty May, his staff, and the players have accomplished,” said Jakus. “I am so fortunate to carry on that tradition."

🔼 Dusting Off That Football. The Florida Atlantic football team held practice after its first scrimmage, which was held on Monday due to Saturday's weather. With the scrimmage on tape and players knowing where the work was needed, enthusiasm was high. Once again, the fields were lined with high school players. This week, it was Broward County on spring break, taking advantage of the opportunity to watch a college practice.
"It is so important to welcome everybody because there are so many good players in our area,” said head coach Tom Herman. “Our three counties that we take so much pride in: Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach—you are talking 80% of all Division I signees in the state of Florida.”
🔼 We Meet Again…and Again. The Florida Atlantic's women's Track & Field team will split off into two squads in two different states, competing in the Pepsi Florida Relays and Raleigh Relays over the weekend.
For the Owls, Jessica Hatch and Anna Rovirosa will take on Raleigh, hosted by N.C. State. At the UF meet, Elyssa Toal and Leah Helms are set for Friday's 1500m race, while Jessica Lambert will look to maintain the American Athletic Conference's top time in the 800m on Saturday.
🔼 Owl Be Moving On Now. The No. 25 Florida Atlantic softball team fell to the ECU Pirates in the series opener on Thursday evening. The Owls move to 28-8, 8-2 AAC after game one of the three-game series. The Owls will get another chance tonight, facing East Carolina for the second game in the AAC matchup at 6 p.m (aired on ESPN+).
🔼 Serving Up Serious Competition. The No. 17-ranked Florida Atlantic Beach Volleyball team (12-7, 2-2 CUSA) heads to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to compete against their toughest four-match stretch of the season thus far, with four nationally ranked matchups at the LSU Death Volley Invitational today (March 29) and tomorrow (March 30).
Along with the Sandy Owls, the tournament field features No. 1 USC (18-2), No. 2 UCLA (15-4, 1-0 PAC-12), No. 3 Stanford (14-2, 1-1 PAC-12), No. 6 Cal (13-5), and No. 4 TCU (18-2, 4-0 CUSA), No. 5 Florida State (19-2), and host No. 10 LSU (12-5).
🔼 Missed Chances in Memphis. Florida Atlantic Baseball didn’t seize some opportunities in the eighth and ninth innings on Thursday night in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Memphis. The Owls will look to even the series in the middle game tonight.
"Tough night,” said head coach John McCormack. “We need to capitalize when opportunities present themselves. C.J. and Sam were outstanding on the mound. They kept us in the game. We must be better in the box.
