🔼 Setting the Baseline. As their first softball season in the American Athletic Conference approaches, the Owls were ranked No. 5 in the AAC Coaches' Poll.
FAU was one of the six members who entered The American this year. Head coach Jordan Clark enters her second season at FAU and first season in the AAC. Her first year saw the Owls win 35 games, their most since 2017, and went 15-9 in conference play.
“We have 15 new faces on the roster and big opportunities for this group,” said Coach Clark. “It's not about where you start in the rankings it's where you end!"
Returning players for Florida Atlantic include junior pitcher Gabby Sacco, coming off a season in which she won 2023 C-USA Pitcher of the Year, as well as sophomore third baseman Jesiana Mora, who finished on the 2023 Conference USA All-Tournament team.
The Owls will begin their season with 19 consecutive home games, beginning with a doubleheader on Thursday, Jan. 8, against Marshall and Arkansas as part of the Paradise Classic.
🔼 No Stroke of Luck. Due to rain, the Florida Atlantic's women's tennis team tried to open the 2024 season three times, first on Friday, then on Sunday, and were finally able to play a tightly contested match Monday afternoon, falling to Northwestern by a 4-3 decision.
The Owls opened the match by grabbing the first point with doubles victories on courts one and two.
Playing in her first collegiate dual match, Panna Bartha assumed control of court one and evened the match score at 2-2. The Owls would earn their second lead of the contest with a court two victory by Victoria Gomez O'Hayon, but that lead was erased just minutes later, and it was tied once again at 3-3.
All eyes and attention turned to court four, which had been forced into a first-set tiebreaker at 6-6 and then moved into the same fate in the second set, ultimately giving the visiting Northwestern Wildcats the victory.
The Owls take on Stetson on the home court next—Saturday, Jan. 27, at 10am ET.
