Paradise Brew 2/19: Lovely Lady Hoops
Women's hoops dominated the South Florida Bulls in a 67-55 road victory
Good morning. Florida Atlantic women's basketball (9-16, 4-10 AAC) dominated the South Florida Bulls (15-12, 7-7 AAC) from start to finish, earning a 67-55 road victory on Saturday inside the Yuengling Center.
The win marked the Owls’ first against the Bulls since Dec. 28, 2001, snapping a three-game skid.
"Huge win, just so proud of this group,” said head coach Jennifer Sullivan. “Just had every reason to come over here and put our heads down, and they just found another gear. Big win, big in-state win, and a big win in conference."
The Owls remain on the road next week as they head to the Lone Star State to take on the UTSA Roadrunners on Feb. 25. Tipoff is scheduled for 2pm ET inside the UTSA Convocation Center.

🔼 Florida Atlantic men's golf finished at +5 to tie for fourth at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville on Saturday.
QUICK HITS
Max Sturdza posted a final round 75 to finish as the Owls' low man in a tie for 13th.
Juan Delgado had the best FAU round of the day with an even-par 70. Delgado circled five birdies and finished tied for 18th.
Jack Wehle also tied for 18th after 72 on Saturday.
The Owls will have three weeks away from competition before a trip to the Auburn Tiger Invitational on March 11-12.
🔼 Headin’ Home. Florida Atlantic baseball held No. 6 Vanderbilt to three hits on Saturday in a 5-4 victory to even the weekend series. Unfortunately, Florida Atlantic baseball dropped the series finale rubber game 11-1 to No. 6 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon.
Vanderbilt jumped in front with two runs in the third, but the Owls got one back in the fourth. Brando Leroux doubled with one out and scored when John Schroeder did the same one batter later. Unfortunately, the FAU offense was held in check from that point forward.
As for the mound, Tyler Murphy made the start on a staff day and recorded two clean innings with three strikeouts. Six pitchers followed Murphy out of the bullpen. Of the six, Zach Abbey and Dylan Oborne held the Commodores without a run.
The Owls return to the FAU Baseball Stadium for the home opener against Towson on Friday at 6:30pm ET.
🔼 Joan of Owls. Thanks to a pair of shutouts in the circle and timely late-game hitting, the Florida Atlantic softball team finished the Joan Joyce Classic with victories over Michigan, 1-0, and Seton Hall, 10-0, on Saturday at the FAU Softball Stadium. Florida Atlantic has won four straight and seven of its last eight to improve to 8-3 overall.
Zoey Jones drove in the game's lone run in the 1-0 win over Michigan, with Trinity Schlotterbeck tossing a complete-game gem. In the nightcap, Becca Jones launched a walk-off, pinch-hit, three-run homer down the left-field line as the Owls run-ruled the Pirates, 10-0, in five innings.
The day began with Florida Atlantic officially dedicating the softball field as Joan Joyce Field during a pregame ceremony that included a number of Joyce's former players. Joyce, a member of 21 different athletics halls of fame, coached the Owls for 28 years, building the program from its inception and winning 1,002 games before her passing at the age of 81 in 2022.
🔼 A Smash Hit. Florida Atlantic's women's tennis team made it seven wins in a row with a 5-2 victory over the visiting South Alabama on Saturday morning. With the win, FAU moves to 7-1 on the season.
"It was a hard-fought win by the team today,” said assistant coach Maria Alvarez. They weren't able to perform at their best level of tennis, but they found ways to stay competitive and showed a lot of grit, especially starting off with the doubles point."
Florida Atlantic will play a rare road match next Saturday, Feb. 24 at North Florida and will then return home to play host to Tulane on Friday, March 1 at 3 p.m.
🔼 Don’t Call it a Comeback. The No. 24 Florida Atlantic men's basketball team's (20-6, 10-3 AAC) valiant comeback effort came up just short, falling to USF (19-5, 11-1 AAC) by a score of 90-86 on Sunday afternoon.
In a game where it seemed like nothing was going the Owls' way, the team stormed back from a 25-point deficit, scoring 41 points in the final eight minutes to almost beat a Bulls team that has won 11 straight games and sits alone at the top of the American Athletic Conference standings.
“We’re proud of our boys’ effort in the second half,” said head coach Dusty May. “We battled back with a competitive spirit. Overall, I thought we played with more force.”
Some Noteworthy Stats:
Vlad Goldin tied his career high of 23 points on 8-for-11 shooting
With 20 points, Johnell Davis extended his double-figure scoring streak to 19 games. He also led the Owls in rebounds (six) and assists (five).
FAU outscored USF in the paint 42-28
Florida Atlantic returns to the Eleanor R. Baldwin on Thursday, Feb. 22, to host SMU. The game will be aired on ESPN2 and tip-off at 7pm ET.
