Men's basketball secures a win over North Texas, closes out regular season and then 👉🏼 tourney
Good morning. "We knew we had a dogfight in front of us, and fortunately, we made the plays we needed to,” said head coach Dusty May of the Florida Atlantic men’s basketball team (23-7, 13-4 AAC) win on Wednesday over North Texas (16-13, 9-8 AAC) by a score of 80-76 in the final road matchup of the season.
Junior guard Johnell Davis led FAU with another elite performance, scoring 29 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field.
Currently ranked second in the AAC standings, the Owls are in position to have a bye in the tournament. They close out the regular season at home for Senior Day on Saturday with their second matchup against Memphis. The game will be aired nationally on CBS, tipping off at 12pm ET.

🔼 A Progressive Party But Make it Baseball. Florida Atlantic baseball and FIU will play a home-and-home series starting tonight at the FAU Baseball Stadium. After the middle game is played in Miami on Saturday, the weekend concludes back in Boca Raton on Sunday afternoon. It’d be the perfect day to bring the family to the ballpark, as the FAU players will stick around after the series finale to sign autographs in front of the first base dugout. Then, all kids 12 and under can run the bases.
Florida Atlantic and FIU have met 133 times, with the Owls holding an 80-53 edge. FAU has won nine of the last 11, dating back to 2021. This will be the first non-conference matchup since 2006 when the Owls were members of the ASUN and FIU competed in the Sun Belt.
🔼 Toto, We’re Not in…Never Mind. The Owls are off to Wichita, Kansas, to take on the Shockers for their inaugural American Athletic Conference series today (Friday, March 8). First pitch is at 1 p.m. EST. The Owls enter conference play facing a Wichita State team that placed No. 1 in the AAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The last time these two programs faced each other was Mar. 1, 2002. After 22 years, these two teams will face off in a conference matchup. This will mark the first game in the American for the Owls. Florida Atlantic leads the program series 2-0.
🔼 Serving Up Good News. The No. 15-ranked Florida Atlantic beach volleyball team (8-2, 2-0 CUSA) competed in Wednesday's GSU Day of Duals. The Sandy Owls earned a pair of 5-0 sweeps over Austin Peay (3-3) and Mercer (3-6) but fell in a tight 3-2 battle against No. 16 Georgia State (7-3). Julie Honzovicova picked up her 50th career win against Mercer.
Florida Atlantic will return home next week as they begin their 2024 home slate with the Capri Classic on March 12, hosting Florida State and FGCU.
🔼 Life’s a Beach. Florida Atlantic's football team is enjoying spring break this week and will begin team spring practices on Tuesday, March 12.
Before the players were dismissed for spring break, they held one final conditioning session, taking full advantage of Paradise’s most brutal natural strength conditioning—SAND! Check out the video here.
🔼 Mac Dishes On Stonehill, FIU…and Breakfast? Coach Mac will also take you down the rabbit hole of the best breakfast foods and memories of the Ows’ 16-run inning against FAU back in 2005.
🔼 Deep in the Burrow. Go Inside the Owls Burrow with Frank Forte to preview the nationally ranked beach volleyball squad's season.
Viewers will "Get to Know" basketball's Johnell Davis with teammate Alijah Martin asking the questions. In "Wired for Sound," go inside basketball practice with Brandon Weatherspoon. The show will catch up with former Owl baseball pitcher Mickey Storey—currently attending spring training just north in West Palm Beach—who enters his sixth season as manager of the Houston Astros Triple-A affiliate. Lastly, you’ll get a glimpse of football's offseason strength and conditioning program under Coach Joey Guarascio.
🔼 On to the Tourney. "Really tough game,” said head coach Jennifer Sullivan of the Florida Atlantic Owls (11-18, 6-12 AAC) falling in their regular-season finale against the Temple Owls (19-11, 13-5 AAC). “I thought we had opportunities to cut it and get it within eight. Tried to find groups and lineups to get us settled, and really just couldn't find any rhythm throughout the game."
Florida Atlantic will now prepare to face off against the No. 12-seeded Wichita State Shockers in the opening round of the AAC Tournament on Saturday, March 9. Tipoff is set for 5pm ET at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
