Paradise Brew 11/22: Is This Heaven? No, It's Paradise

Coach Mac and FAU baseball receive a major gift for fan enhancement.

Good morning. Christmas came early for FAU baseball, and it’s perfect news for Thanksgiving Eve. Florida Atlantic Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White announced on Monday a $300,000 gift for the FAU baseball program from Boca Raton resident Russell Berman.

“Coach Mac's teams win at a high level and, more importantly, are first-class representatives of the university both on and off the field,” said White. “A lifelong baseball fan himself, Russell recognizes that success and we are grateful for his gift that impacts our program for years to come."

The creation of the Berman Zone down the left field line will include cabana-style seating along with a number of other fan and family-friendly enhancements.

🔼 Mad Hatters, Indeed. A record-setting fourth-quarter defensive performance powered the Florida Atlantic Owls (3-1, 0-0 AAC) to their third-straight win, defeating the Stetson Hatters (1-4, 0-0 ASUN) 50-39 on Monday evening at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

While the game was a battle back and forth for the first three quarters, the Owls' defense was absolutely suffocating in the fourth. They kept the Hatters scoreless for nearly 10 minutes of play. Florida Atlantic scored 20 unanswered from the 0:31 mark of the third quarter through the 1:32-minute mark of the fourth to take a 50-37 lead. The Owls held the Hatters to a program-record two points in the fourth quarter, marking the fewest points they have ever held a team to in a single quarter. The Hatters finally scored at the 1:09-minute mark, but it was too little too late as the Owls secured the 11-point win, 50-39.

Jada Moore, Aniya Hubbard, and Janeta Rozentale led the Owls in the win. Moore filled the stat sheet, finishing with a season-high 16 points, shooting 46 percent (6-of-13) from the field and 67 percent (4-of-6) from the line while also pulling down six boards, dishing out three assists and collecting a pair of steals.

Florida Atlantic will head back on the road following the Thanksgiving holiday as the Owls head to Kennesaw, Georgia, to take on the Kennesaw State Owls for a 2pm ET tip on Saturday, Nov. 25.

🔼 Owl See You at Disney World. Through two weeks of the 2023-24 regular season, the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team (2-1) remains in the Associated Press Top 25, as announced by the AP on Monday afternoon.

The Owls are ranked No. 19 in the nation following a 1-1 week highlighted by a crushing 100-57 victory over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, Nov. 14, a game in which the team shot 63% from the field and 52% from beyond the arc. The top five scorers, Vlad Goldin (19), Brandon Weatherspoon (16), Giancarlo Rosado (13), Brenen Lorient (13), and Bryan Greenlee (12), combined to shoot for 82% (31-38).

Though the Owls fell to Bryant on Saturday night, 61-52, the night was keyed by a strong performance from Johnell Davis, who recorded his fourth career double-double with 17 points and a career-high tying 12 rebounds.

Florida Atlantic will spend Thanksgiving weekend competing in the eight-team ESPN Events Invitational, hosted at Walt Disney World. The first matchup will be against Butler on Thursday, Nov. 23, at 2:30pm ET.

🔼 Power Owls Look to Leave Their Mark. With one week left to play in the 2023 Florida Atlantic University football season, the Owls (4-7, 3-4 AAC) took to the fields Tuesday morning in preparation for the contest scheduled for 1 p.m. EST this Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at Rice (5-6, 3-4 AAC).

With plenty on the line, Florida Atlantic goes into the game with several hallmark players looking to etch themselves in the annals of FAU. Senior running back Larry McCammon III has used the year to build a rushing career among the program's top five. Junior receiver LaJohntay Wester, who has led the nation wire-to-wire in total receptions, is listed 31 times (9 career, 15 seasons, and 7 single-game). Neither accomplishment would exist without the consistent play of senior offensive lineman Marquice Robinson, who is one game shy of tying the program's all-time games played list at 60 and has also started every 2023 game.

On the defensive side, the Owls will enter this week's game with 83 (64-38) tackles for a loss, accumulated by 25 FAU defenders. Jaylen Wester has a team-leading 7.5 TFLs for a loss of 20 yards. Courtney McBride has added seven, and Jarron Morris has 6.5 for a loss of 19 yards. The Owls' 83 TFLs rank third all-time for a single season and are just five shy of a single-season record with one game to play. FAU's all-time single-season TFL high is 88 (60-50) set in 2019. The No. 2 spot is 85 (63-34) and was set in 2017.

🔼 Swan Song in the Swamp. Florida Atlantic volleyball (19-12, 11-7 AAC) will wrap up its regular season slate today at 1pm ET as the Owls visit the Tulane Green Wave for their regular season finale in New Orleans.

The Owls have their eyes set on battling for a chance to secure a share of the AAC East Division championship. Sitting one match behind the Bulls, with a win over Tulane and a USF loss to Rice, the Owls can win a share of the East Division title.

No matter the outcome, this season is already a success, as Florida Atlantic's 19 wins this season mark the most for the Owls since the 2018-19 season and the second most for any Owl team under head coach Fernanda Nelson.

The Owls also rank second in the AAC in total attacks (4,159), kills (1,537), assists (1,425), and kills per set (13.48), in addition to ranking third in attacks per set (36.48) and assists per set (12.50), and fourth in digs (1,748).
