Paradise Brew 10/23: In Sweeping Fashion
Today, we applaud the FAU volleyball team for their first-ever AAC sweep.
Good morning. It's time to get those brooms out—and just in time for Halloween—as the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team (13-10, 5-5 AAC) earned their first-ever AAC sweep, defeating the UAB Blazers (3-20, 1-10 AAC) 3-0 at Bartow Arena.
It was an epic battle as the Owls held a 21-19 lead late in the final set, but Florida Atlantic scored four unanswered to close out the match, securing the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third.

🔼 Taming the Panthers. Florida Atlantic men's soccer sent a shockwave through the AAC on Friday night. The Owls defeated No. 14 FIU 2-1 to earn a massive three points in the conference standings with just one AAC match left to be played in the regular season.
Victor Claudel put the Owls on the board first in the 12th minute. Leon Reilhac played a ball into space down the right flank, and Claudel ran onto it in the penalty area. The FIU goalkeeper came out to challenge Claudel, but the Frenchmen sidestepped him. Despite a tight angle, Claudel was able to find the far corner of the open goal to put the Owls on top. It was his fifth goal of the season.
The Owls carried the 1-0 edge into halftime. Just minutes after the restart of the second half, Noah Kvifte doubled the lead. Leo Keller’s cross into the six-yard box was slightly behind Kvifte, but the Owls' center forward found a way to redirect it back across his body and into the bottom corner. Kvifte's team-leading sixth goal of the season made for a wild final 40 minutes.
The Owls found another level defensively for the remainder of the second half. Despite FIU getting on the board to make it 2-1 in the 63rd minute, goalkeeper Rotem Fadida stood tall, as always, to finish with four total saves. The Owls held on to defeat their rivals from the south for the first time since 2013.
The Owls have one league match left in the regular season – November 1 at USF. Prior to that, they'll celebrate senior night on Tuesday with a non-conference visit from Florida Gulf Coast. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm ET.

🔼 Rise and Grind. Florida Atlantic women's soccer shutout Rice (3-12-2, 1-6-1 AAC) in Houston, Texas. The Owls improved to 7-5-5 and 3-2-3 in the AAC.
The match remained scoreless through the first half. In the 77th minute, Sofia Voldby found the back of the net to take the lead. The goal by Voldby (3) was assisted by Michelle Horan; Horan recorded a new career-high of four assists in a season.
“I’m proud of our girls today. Full credit to the girls in the heat…grinded out a result,” said Coach Patrick Baker.
The Owls move to third in the east standings of the AAC.
Up Next: Florida Atlantic will return to the Sunshine State to face the Bulls in the last regular season match on Thursday, Oct. 26.
🔼 No Time to Dwell. The Florida Atlantic University football team (3-4, 2-1 AAC) fell to the UTSA Roadrunners (4-3, 3-0 AAC) by a score of 36-10 on Saturday night.
For the third game in a row, FAU scored on their opening offensive possession. A key 39-yard pass to redshirt senior Je’Quan Burton led to a 37-yard field goal by FAU man of the hour Logan Lupo.
Later in the period, junior cornerback Daedae Hill became the eighth Owl defender to force a turnover with his first career interception.
On the very next defensive possession, redshirt junior Latrell Jean became the ninth. Jean, a 280-pound defensive tackle, intercepted a deflected pass and ran it into the end zone. He is the first interior defensive lineman for Florida Atlantic to record a pick-six since Owl-turned-NFL player Trevon Coley in 2014.
The Owls recorded their third takeaway of the night early on in the fourth quarter, and by a 10th different player on the year, with sophomore LB Jaylen Wester forcing a fumble that was recovered by Xavier Peters.
"Obviously, hats off to Coach (Jeff) Traylor and his crew,” head coach Tom Herman said. “That is a well-oiled outfit. You can tell that team has been building something special for the last four years. They came out and outcoached us, outplayed us, out-physicaled us, they out-everythinged us.”
“The best thing to happen to us is a quick turnaround; we will get on that plane to Charlotte on Thursday. If I know anything about this team, it is that they respond."
Coach Herman referred to the fact that the Owls are playing on Friday this coming week instead of the usual Saturday games. The FAU Owls will take on the Charlotte 49ers on Friday, Oct. 27—kickoff will be at 7:30pm ET, to be broadcast on ESPN2.
