Paradise Brew 3/4: FAU's Goldin Boy

Vlad Goldin led the way yet again with his fifth outing in six games with 20+ points in win over Tulane

Good morning. Florida Atlantic's men's basketball team (22-7, 11-4 AAC) took down Tulane (13-15, 4-12 AAC) by a score of 79-73 on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls picked up their 11th straight home win to move to 12-1 on the season and have been victorious in 30 of their last 31 games played at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

Junior center Vlad Goldin led the way yet again with his fifth outing in six games with 20+ points and his fourth in a row.

For the second time this season, two Owls, Goldin (21 points, 12 rebounds) and Alijah Martin (13 points, 11 rebounds), had a double-double in one game.

The Owls will hit the road for the last time in the regular season, taking on North Texas (15-12, 8-7 AAC) on Wednesday, March 2, tipping off at 8pm ET, airing on ESPN+.

🔼 A Sweep For the Seniors. The Florida Atlantic Owls (11-17, 6-11 AAC) closed out their 2023-24 regular season slate on Sunday, completing the season sweep against the Charlotte 49ers (16-13, 9-8 AAC) with a 56-47 win on Senior Day.

"Really excited and so glad to get a win on senior day,” said head coach Jennifer Sullivan. “We have a terrific group of seniors, and they deserve to go out on a win against a really good Charlotte Team."

Janeta Rozentale and Aniya Hubbard led the Owls in the win. Rozentale scored a team-high 14 points, shooting 43 percent (6-of-14) from the field and 40 percent (2-of-5) from beyond the arc. Hubbard also finished in double figures with a team second-best 13 points, shooting 71 percent (5-of-7) from the field and 67 percent (2-of-3) from 3-point range.

The Owls will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday as they head to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls. Tipoff is set for 7pm ET.

🔼 Owls > Ducks. The Florida Atlantic Owls' men's tennis team, ranked No. 35 nationally, battled all afternoon in California before ultimately taking down No. 46 Oregon 4-3 on Sunday at a neutral site on the campus of the University of California Santa Barbara.

"I'm so impressed with this team's togetherness, heart, and fighting spirit,” said Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU's Director of Tennis. “Things were definitely not looking good for us early on. Our boys fought their tails off, stayed focused and composed through the tough times, and found a way to beat a very tough Oregon team. I'm extremely proud of this group. Tomorrow, we have another tough challenge against UCSB. Our boys will be ready to go."

The Owls will remain in California to play weekend host #75 UCSB on Monday at 4 p.m.

🔼 A Sandy Sunday Sweep. The No. 15 Florida Atlantic beach volleyball team (6-2, 2-0 CUSA) closed out the weekend perfect on Sunday, earning a 4-1 win against Conference USA foe UTEP (2-6, 0-2 CUSA) and securing a 5-0 sweep in the Sandy Owls UAB Beach Classic finale against Eastern Kentucky (5-2).

The Sandy Owls improve to 6-2 on the season, finishing the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record at the UAB Beach Classic.

Florida Atlantic will head to Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday, March 6 to compete in the Georgia State Day of Duals, facing off against Austin Peay, Mercer, and Georgia State.

The 15-run seventh inning was one run short of the single-inning program record. The Owls scored 16 in the second inning of an 18-5 win over FIU on April 5, 2005.

Steven Andrews was the winning pitcher after recording all three outs in the seventh, including one strikeout. Sam Drumheller made his season debut, pitching a clean ninth.

“I’m happy we won the series, and this will give us a little momentum going into spring break,” said head coach John McCormack.

The Owls will travel to Gainesville on Tuesday to meet the No. 4-ranked Florida Gators. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

🔼 Putting the “Wooo” in Wooo Pig Classic. The Florida Atlantic softball team concluded the Wooo Pig Classic with a 7-2 win over South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon.

For the Owls, they wrap up the tournament with a 3-1 record, two of the victories coming over the Jackrabbits, and move to 17-5 on the season.

Pitcher Gabby Sacco put forth a solid outing, going four innings without allowing a hit before being relieved in the two-run fifth inning.

The Owls remain in the state for a true road game against Central Arkansas tomorrow (Tuesday, March 5.) They begin their first American Athletic Conference series this weekend, facing Wichita State on the road from Friday, March 8 – Sunday, March 10. All AAC games are broadcast on ESPN+.

🔼 On Cloud Nine. The Florida Atlantic women's tennis team improved their winning streak to nine with a 4-1 victory over fellow American Athletic Conference member Tulane on Friday afternoon.

The Owls, 9-1 and on a program-best start, dropped the doubles point, but it was the last point FAU would surrender.

"I'm very impressed with how our girls bounced back after losing a tough doubles point," said FAU Director of Tennis Ricardo Gonzales. “There were no distractions, just pure toughness, composure, and discipline throughout the entire match.”

The Owls will next play host to Furman at 10am ET on Tuesday, March 5.
