Paradise Brew 1/22: Every Day They're Hustling
FAU men's hoops used explosive offense to overcome a deficit and snag the win over UTSA in OT.
Good morning. A historic day on offense propelled the No. 23 Florida Atlantic men's basketball team (15-4, 5-1 AAC) to a 112-103 OT victory over UTSA (7-12, 1-5 AAC) on Sunday afternoon.
Junior guards Johnell Davis and Alijah Martin combined for 60 points, 39 coming in the second half and overtime, as the Owls stormed back from a 16-point deficit.
"We have guys that made big, big plays, whether it was a hustle play off of a rebound, a big shot, a great pass, whatever the case,” said head coach Dusty May. “UTSA had us on our heels…that was a heck of a college basketball game, and fortunately, we came out on the right side of the win/loss column."

🔼 Hobbling the ‘Runners. The shots kept falling all afternoon for FAU in their win over UTSA. As a team, they nabbed 52% from the field and 48.6% from downtown on the way to 112 points, tied for the second most in a game in program history.
Florida Atlantic trailed by as much as 16, but the Owls kept firing away and were eventually rewarded. UTSA, however, would not go down without a fight and took the lead with under 30 seconds remaining in regular play. Trailing by three with 16 seconds to go, Johnell Davis threw up a shot from beyond the arc and drew the foul. He would swish all three free throw attempts to send the game to overtime.
Overtime was Martin's time to shine. With the game tied at 96, he forced a steal and turned it into a three-point play on the other end, the first three of nine points in the period to put the game away.
Some Noteworthy Stats:

🔼 Perfection Not Pending. The Florida Atlantic's men's tennis team (3-0) shutout Stetson (0-1) 7-0 on Saturday afternoon to tally a perfect season-opening home record before the Owls take to the road for the first time next week.
It was the first match of the 2024 seasons, both men and women, that was not affected by weather. The clear blue skies and 74-degree temperatures signaled smooth sailing, and that is exactly what the FAU men's team did on Saturday.
The Owls will go on the road this week, for the first time playing dual matches, playing at William & Mary on Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. They will then travel to Charlottesville, Virginia where they will first play Pennsylvania on Jan. 27 and will then play either Virginia or Northern Arizona.
🔼 Well, That Was Rad. The Florida Atlantic women's track & field team carried their momentum from day one into day two of the RADD Invitational on Saturday as they continued to etch their names into the program's top 10 record books and had multiple strong finishes.
“There were so many great performances,” said Head Coach Georgette Nixon. “People really pushed each other to get after it.”
