Paradise Brew 12/4: Burrow Beatdown

FAU hoops ends Field of 68 with a decisive win over Charleston in front of an electric crowd.

Good morning. The No. 13 Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team (7-1) concluded The Field of 68 Classic with a rousing 81-69 victory over Charleston (4-4) on Saturday evening.

While the Owls experienced their biggest adversity of the young season, facing their first halftime deficit, a now-characteristic second-half offensive explosion and defensive shutdown took place in front of an electric FAU crowd, with Florida Atlantic outscoring Charleston 50-28.

🔼 And the Crowd Goes Wild. "Shout out to our fans. The energy, the juice, even when we weren't playing well, they brought it,” said head coach Dusty May of the fans at the Elly during Saturday’s game. “When you feel the crowd behind you like we did, it is obvious the impact it has. Also, what an honor to be a part of the first Field of 68 event. They were first class, this was a really cool deal against two great non-Power Five programs.”

Some highlights from the win over Charleston:

  • Johnell Davis led in scoring with 24, his second 20+ point outing of the 2023-24 campaign, saying, "My teammates just kept finding me in transition, and I kept going to the lane and finishing."

  • For the second time this season, two Owls recorded double-doubles in the same game—Davis (24 points, 10 rebounds) and Vlad Goldin (17 points, 12 rebounds). As the nation's leader in field goal percentage, Goldin’s 7-8 performance puts him at 75% on the season.

  • Florida Atlantic got to the free throw line a season-high 29 times.

  • The Owls outscored the Cougars 52-24 in the paint.

  • Florida Atlantic held a 45-34 rebounding advantage.

The Owls will have another quick turnaround, heading back to the location in which Florida Atlantic earned their first Final Four appearance—Madison Square Garden. FAU will participate in the Jimmy V Classic, taking on No. 24 Illinois on Tuesday at 6:30pm ET, to be aired on ESPN.

🔼 A Season Of Highs. The Florida Atlantic Owls’ (20-13, 12-7 AAC) remarkable 2023 season came to a close on Friday as the Owls fell in a straight-set battle against the UT Arlington Mavericks (21-10, 9-7 WAC) during the opening round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).

Arianna Beckham led the Owls with 11 kills and added four digs and a pair of blocks. Victoria Hensley dished out a team-high 31 assists, adding eight digs and a couple of service aces. Isabelle Northam and Cornelio led the Owls' back row with nine digs each, while Cornelio also added six kills in the match.

The Owls close the 2023 season with a 20-13 overall record and a 12-7 mark in their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference. 2023 brought numerous big moments for the Owls, marking the team's best season since 2018 and the second-best finish for a team under head coach Fernanda Nelson. It also marked the Owls' first national postseason appearance since 2005 and their first-ever berth in the NIVC.
