🔼 Who’s Cutting Onions? Florida Atlantic Athletics coordinated an emotional military homecoming on Saturday during its Military Appreciation Day football game at FAU Stadium. Chief Petty Officer Jacob Drevecky of the U.S. Navy, who had been deployed in South Korea, was reunited with his unsuspecting family after being away on active duty.
Between the first and second quarters of the Owls' football game versus Army West Point, Florida Atlantic University President Stacy Volnick, along with Vice President and Director of Athletic Brian White, welcomed Emily Drevecky along with the couple's two children, Beaudry (9) and Ella (4), to the field, where they were honored as part of the Military Appreciation game day-long festivities. Once recognized, the trio was surprised by Chief Petty Officer Drevecky running onto the field with a bouquet of flowers and long-awaited hugs.
🔼 A Blip on the Radar. Florida Atlantic's women's soccer team fell to Tennessee Sunday afternoon.
The Owls remain on the road for their first American Athletic Conference matchup in Denton, Texas. Florida Atlantic will face North Texas on Thursday, Sept. 12. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 PM ET.
🔼 Getting Back to Work. The Florida Atlantic football team fell to Army West Point on Saturday afternoon by a score of 24-7.
"The silver lining is we don't play another one of these in our conference for a while, but we're not going to beat anybody if we don't take the steps to play consistently,” said head coach Tom Herman. “We'll get back to work tomorrow.”
Florida Atlantic will renew its rivalry with FIU on Saturday, Sep. 14, for the 22nd Shula Bowl. It will be hosted at FAU Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
🔼 Oh Captain, Co-Captain. From FAU Co-Captain Federico Maranges:
Growing up in Puerto Rico, football became my passion at a young age. In 2017, when Hurricane Maria struck the island, my life changed forever. My school shut down for three months, and I knew there were no recruiting opportunities in Puerto Rico. So, I left everything behind at the age of 16 and moved to Miami. Now, going into my sixth year with Florida Atlantic football and a growing program, change has been both challenging and rewarding as I continue to learn how to adapt to new situations and evolve as a player.
Off the field, I am going into my fourth year as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), helping to raise mental health awareness among athletes and contributing to the community. Through this experience, I have built skills in leadership, communication and adaptability that I have transferred to the field and my position of offensive lineman.
