Paradise Brew 10/16: Bull's Eye

Today, we're positively giddy about the domination over South Florida.

Good morning. Up until now, Florida Atlantic football’s defense had been the talk of the town. On Saturday, however, the Owls showed an offensive explosiveness like never before. With 35 unanswered points scored on USF in the second half, this team is on the rise—just in time for Homecoming.

🔼 No Bull. The Florida Atlantic University football team (3-3, 2-0 AAC) took the Bulls by the horns in a dominating 56-14 win over the University of South Florida (3-4, 2-2 AAC) on Saturday.

It was a scoring explosion for the Owls, who racked up 35 unanswered points in the second half and showed no mercy in an afternoon that saw several players have career days.

Daniel Richardson found his targets all day on his way to a career-high 382 yards on 31-38 passing. While he spread the ball around to nine different receivers, more career days by redshirt sophomore Tony Johnson and junior LaJohntay Wester were keys to a historic offensive night.

The Owls remain perfect in American Athletic Conference play in their inaugural season with the AAC and find themselves firmly in the mix at the top of the conference.

“You can have the ball for as long as you want on offense, but if you don't have much to show for it on the scoreboard, it is not really beneficial,” Head Coach Tom Herman said. “But to be able to score that many points as well as a bunch of guys that when their number was called on defense really stepped up.”

With a season-high number of sacks (six!), we’d say that’s a bit of an understatement.

The Owls went 1-0 in the AAC this week and will have to go 1-0 AAC next week. The next challenge is the UTSA Roadrunners, who won the FAU's previous conference in 2022, Conference USA, before joining the American. The game is set for Saturday, Oct. 21, at 6:00p.m. ET at FAU Stadium, marking homecoming weekend. The broadcast will be on ESPN+.

🔼 Owl Be Seeing You. The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team pulled off a monumental upset on Friday, defeating the Rice Owls in five sets to claim FAU’s first win against Rice in Houston and the program's first win over Rice since 2018. The other Owls were previously unbeaten in American Athletic Conference play and received votes in the AP Top 25 poll.

"Our captains have been leading this team since this summer, and I can't say enough about their great leadership and how much they care about FAU," said head coach Fernanda Nelson. “They have fun with each other, and they have been putting in the work, so to see them beat a great team like Rice, a perennial top-25 team, and celebrate the win was incredible."

Three Owls led the way with double-figure kills. Valeria Rosado posted a team-high 11 kills, while Arianna Beckham and Katelynn Robine registered 10 kills each in the win. Rosado registered her sixth double-double of the season with 19 digs, and Beckham tallied her second career double-double with a career-best 18 digs. Hensley registered a team-high 38 assists to power the Owls' offense while also registering a career-best six kills. Isabelle Northam led the Owls' back row, registering a career-high 25 digs, while Lauryn Green was the Owls' leader at the net, tallying five blocks, including a season-high three solo blocks.

The Owls remain on the road next weekend as they travel to Birmingham, Ala. for a pair of matches against the UAB Blazers on Oct. 21 and 22 at Bartow Arena.

🔼 The Ol’ Heave Ho. As the sun set on their regular season, FAU women's cross-country team passed a huge test.

The Owls crushed the 6K on Saturday morning at the East Carolina Pirate Invite, which will be the host site of the team's first AAC Championships on Oct. 28. The team snagged a second-place finish out of eight teams (85 points) and continued to post strong times with close spreads between the athletes.

No rest for the weary, though. Now comes championship prep. The men's and women's teams will get to work over the next two weeks to get set for their first AAC Championships, also held in Grimesland, on Saturday, Oct. 28.
