Paradise Brew 1/29: Approaching GOAT Status
Johnell Davis sinks a shot with .4 left on the clock, giving men's hoops 66-63 the win over North Texas
Good morning. Johnell Davis sunk a miraculous shot from downtown to give No. 22 Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team (17-4, 7-1 AAC) the 66-63 victory over North Texas (12-6, 5-2 AAC) on Sunday afternoon. The shot, made with just 0.4 left on the clock, gave Davis 28 points on the day.
Davis' offensive efforts were complemented by key plays on both sides of the floor from the rest of the Owls to give the team their sixth straight victory, the longest win streak of the season.
“I like having the ball in his [Johnell’s] hands late in the game,” said head coach Dusty May.
Florida Atlantic will have almost a week off before its next game against Tulsa on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. Tip-off will be at 6pm ET.

🔼 Props Outside Of Paradise. Florida Atlantic women's basketball (6-13, 1-7 AAC) picked up its first American Athletic Conference win, earning a 63-56 road win over the Wichita State Shockers (6-15, 2-7 AAC) on Saturday inside Charles Koch Arena.
"Getting our first win in the American was huge,” said head coach Jennifer Sullivan. “Winning on the road is huge. Just a tough battle from start to finish, and our kids did it."
Aniya Hubbard, Mya Perry, and Alexa Zaph led the Owls to the win, with Hubbard recording her fifth 20-point game of the season—a game-high 21 points—while shooting 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field, 88 percent (7-of-8) from the line, and tying her career-best six assists.
Florida Atlantic will next travel to Birmingham, Alabama, as they get ready to face off against the UAB Blazers on Wednesday, Jan. 31. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm ET.
🔼 Advantage FAU. After falling 2-1 in doubles play, the Florida Atlantic women's tennis team surrendered the doubles point before taking control of the singles courts for the 5-2 victory over in-state foe FGCU on Sunday afternoon.
Doubles play was tight, with all eyes turning to court three for the decider, which FAU ultimately (2-1) lost in a tiebreaker. The Eagles (0-3) earned the point, but it was the Owls who captured the momentum.
"After a tough start in doubles, the girls showed a lot of discipline and grit on every singles court," said assistant coach Maria Alvarez. "I'm happy with the way they competed this weekend, and there are a lot of positives to take from these two matches to keep building momentum."
With the win, the Owls move to 2-1 and will play host to Georgia State at 12pm ET on Saturday, Feb. 3.
🔼 Relaying Good News. The Florida Atlantic women's track & field team concluded a strong meet at the Florida Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
Building on record-breaking performances on Friday, the Owls recorded multiple top finishes, ultimately ending the meet—their third and final of the season in Gainesville—with a win in the 4x400m relay.
The Owls will enjoy a well-deserved weekend off from competition before heading to Boston for multiple meets: the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday, Feb. 9, and the Eagle Elite Invitational from Feb. 9 – 10.
🔼 Singles FTW. Florida Atlantic was on the winning end of a close match and came away with a 4-3 victory over Pennsylvania on Saturday morning. With the win, the Owls moved to 5-0 on the young season and earned the right to play 2024 ITA Kickoff Tournament host and the 2022 and 2023 National Champion Virginia at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Saturday's exciting match saw the Owls drop the doubles point. It was the first doubles point surrendered by FAU in 2024. At that point, Florida Atlantic needed and secured four singles points for the win to remain perfect and for the chance to play Virginia.
"Today was all about toughness and grit," said Director of Tennis Ricardo Gonzalez. "It was not our best performance tennis-wise, by any means, but our guys hung tough and found a way to get a team win.”
🔼 Great News From the Deck. The Florida Atlantic swimming & diving teams wrapped up their final meet of the regular season at the FAU Aquatic Center on Saturday morning. It was a competitive rivalry meet between the FAU women's team and FIU, while the Florida Atlantic men's team prepped for conference with intersquad events.
