Paradise Brew 2/26: Anyone Seen the Broom? 🧹

FAU baseball crushed Towson 16-1 in Sunday's series finale to complete a three-game sweep

FAU starter Tyler Murphy limited the Tigers to a lone run in what could have been a big inning for the visitors. Towson had the bases loaded with no outs, but Murphy got a strikeout and a double play to escape.

“It was a really great Sunday for everybody,” said head coach John “Mac” McCormack. “Now we’ve got a really tough rest of the homestand coming up.”

The Owls will play two midweek games, starting with UCF on Tuesday, followed by a visit from North Florida on Wednesday. Both games will start at 6:30pm ET at the FAU Baseball Stadium.

🔼 Easy Like a Sunday Afternoon. The Florida Atlantic softball team defeated Columbia 7-0 and Rhode Island 1-0 (8) on Sunday to improve their record to 13-4 on the year.

The Owls, who went 5-1 in the Owl Classic, are riding a five-game winning streak and added to their impressive weekend by outscoring their opponents 25-4 with three-straight shutouts.

The pitching staff tossed 15 scoreless innings on Sunday, extending their scoreless inning streak to 20.

“All five pitchers got a chance to show what they’ve got this weekend,” said head coach Jordan Clark.

The Owls will host South Florida foe FIU on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 6pm ET. Florida Atlantic will then travel to Arkansas for the Woo Pig Classic scheduled for March 1-3. They will remain in Arkansas to face Central Arkansas on Mar. 5 and open American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series scheduled for March 8-10 on the road against Wichita State.

🔼 Playing a Bit of Tennis Tetris. The Florida Atlantic men's tennis team, who hold a 9-3 record and are ranked No. 41 nationally, defeated fellow American Athletic Conference member UTSA by a 4-1 score on Sunday afternoon.

The Owls captured courts #1 and #3 to secure the doubles point. FAU continued to make singles lineup changes in search of the winning combination. The shift paid off with all three capturing their matches and recording the three necessary singles victories to secure the win.

"I'm proud of how our team performed today, said Director of Tennis Ricardo Gonzalez. “We stayed tough in the tough moments and fought together as a team.”

The Owls will next play host to North Florida on Friday, March 1, at 11am ET at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center.

🔼 Time to Get Outdoors. The Florida Atlantic women's track & field team concluded the second and final day of the 2024 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday.

Anabell Reumann led the way for the Owls in the 3000m (9:58.27), with Leah Helms (10:13.32) and Jordan Stevens (10:22.11) both setting new personal records. Rosa Ten Berg put forth a new personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:10.87—third best in Florida Atlantic history.

Florida Atlantic will have a busy outdoor season beginning March 15 at the USF Alumni Invitational. For more the full schedule, click HERE.

🔼 And Zen. The American Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is set to host its spring semester Powerful Minds Week on February 25-March 2. Several events are planned by Florida Atlantic's Student-Athlete Success Center and sponsored by Gro Yoga & Wellness.

The American Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, representing the more than 7,000 student-athletes in the Conference, continues to make mental health and safety its top priority. With the inception of its Powerful Minds Campaign in the fall of 2017, The American SAAC has helped create awareness of mental health issues and the resources available for student-athletes.

🔼 Super Streaky. Florida Atlantic women's tennis (8-1) earned a 4-1 road win over North Florida (4-4) Saturday morning to increase their winning streak to eight straight.

The Owls' 8-1 record is the best start since a 7-2 start in 2003 (records kept 2000-2024). The victory over the Osprey moves the all-time series record to 6-4 in favor of the Owls.

"After winning a close doubles point, the girls continued to show their hard work pays off,” said assistant coach Maria Alvarez. “We showed a lot of grit today. Great job by Panna [Bartha] being the first one off the court with a solid performance, and Amber [McGinnis] played a terrific third set to clinch the match."

🔼 Full Speed Ahead. Florida Atlantic women's golf (+58) finished ninth at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invite on Sunday afternoon. The tournament hosts, Mercer (-1), ran away with a 26-shot victory over second-place Western Kentucky (+25).

Olivia Bergner led the Owls in Sunday's final round with a 73 (+1). The senior balanced out three birdies with three bogeys to tie for 15th.

The Owls will head to Gainesville for the Gator Invitational beginning next Saturday.

🔼 Staying Goldin. Another late-game rally from being down double digits was not enough for the FAU men's basketball team (21-7, 11-4 AAC), falling to Memphis (20-8, 9-6 AAC) by a score of 78-74 on Sunday afternoon.

In a game with 15 lead changes and five ties, the Owls came up just short. The effort was once again led by junior center Vlad Goldin, who logged 22 points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting from the field. This marked his third consecutive game scoring 20+ points.

Florida Atlantic will return home to the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena to host Tulane on Saturday, March 2. It will be an early tip-off with a 12pm ET start time.

🔼 Runners Up. Florida Atlantic women's basketball (9-17, 4-11 AAC) dropped a 76-60 decision on the road Sunday against the UTSA Roadrunners (14-12, 8-7 AAC).

"I thought we hung with them on the boards at our place, but to get outrebounded the way we did today, it's just hard to overcome that,” said Coach Jennifer Sullivan. “Excited to have a couple of players back, and we will work to regroup and get ready for Wednesday."

The Owls return home on Wednesday to host the Tulane Green Wave for a midweek matchup inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm ET.
