🔼 A Story to Love. The Florida Atlantic's women's tennis team moved to 4-1 on the year after defeating DePaul 4-0 early Sunday morning.
The Owls returned to the court about 12 hours after defeating Georgia State on Saturday to play host to DePaul. The Blue Demons match was moved up from a previously scheduled 1pm ET start to 8am ET first serve due to poor weather predicted for the late morning. The match started with singles play, and the format was moved from clinch/play to clinch.
"I'm proud of the way the girls are showing up and competing," said assistant coach Maria Alvarez. “They found a way to play simple and disciplined tennis from start to finish. Good win to keep gaining confidence and keep the momentum going. We will continue to work hard for the upcoming matches at USF next week."
🔼 The Elly Effect. The No. 20 Florida Atlantic men's basketball team (18-4, 8-1 AAC) took down Tulsa (12-9, 3-6 AAC) on Saturday night at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. The Owls hit the century mark for the third time this season in a rousing 102-70 victory.
A comfortable first-half lead turned into a second-half blowout, with the Owls scoring 62 points on 56% shooting on a night marked by several highlight plays from a variety of players.
With the win, FAU picked up their seventh straight victory, eighth straight at the Elly.
“We’re super pleased to play good, sound basketball on both sides,” said head coach Dusty May. “I thought our home court…the fans, the students, the energy in here set the tone from the tip.”
Some Noteworthy Stats:
Johnell Davis recorded his 15th straight game in double figures, dropping 24 points on eight-for-12 shooting, three-for-four from beyond the arc
Alijah Martin added a game-high nine rebounds to his 16 points
Vlad Goldin scored 18 on seven-for-10 shooting
The entire starting lineup recorded double-digit points for the second time this season.
Florida Atlantic returns to the road for a two-game trip. First up is a matchup against UAB on Thursday, Feb. 8, tipping off at 9pm ET on ESPN2.
🔼 The Elly Effect, Part Two. A dominant fourth-quarter performance lifted the Florida Atlantic Owls (7-14, 2-8 AAC) to a 68-63 comeback win over the Rice Owls (12-9, 6-4 AAC) on Saturday at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
Saturday's win marked the program's 500th all-time win during its 40-year history.
Florida Atlantic battled through four ties through a 61-61 stalemate with 49 seconds to play. Aniya Hubbard hit a clutch jumper from just barely inside the 3-point arc, pushing the Owls back in front 63-31. Jada Moore knocked down a pair of free throws, and Hubbard tallied one as well to push the Owls lead to five, 66-61, with 19 seconds to play. Rice got two more free throws, but it wasn't enough as Moore tacked on two more for the Owls to seal the 68-63 win.
"We all felt pretty confident that a win like this was coming,” head coach Jennifer Sullivan said. “I think a lot of good things that this team has been doing over the last couple months are starting to come together, and so to have it happen in this fashion against a really good Rice team was big.”
FAU hits the road this upcoming week as the team visits the Charlotte 49ers on Wednesday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30pm ET inside Halton Arena.
🔼 A ‘Niner Incident. Florida Atlantic men's tennis (6-2) fell to fellow American Athletic Conference member Charlotte (5-2) 5-2 in a non-conference contest on Saturday night.
The Owls, who have proven to be tough in doubles play, dropped the point after an hour-long battle. The 49ers then held momentum, earning victories on four of the six singles courts for the match's final.
FAU's next three matches will be on the road starting on Thursday, Feb. 8, at UCF.
