Paradise Brew 9/4: Hats Off For This Hat Trick

A hat trick lands soccer's Mamadou Diarra as Offensive Player of the Week + one for Kasper Heerfordt

Good Morning, Owl Nation. Florida Atlantic men's soccer claimed half of this week's American Conference weekly honors, the league announced on Monday. Mamadou Diarra earned the Offensive Player of the Week award, while Kasper Heerfordt was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Diarra burst onto the scene with a hat trick in the first half on Thursday vs. Stetson. The senior followed up that performance by scoring the game-winner in the second half on Sunday against Belmont.

Heerfordt, the Owls' only true freshman, played all 90 minutes at right back on Sunday. He delivered the cross that led to Diarra's game-winner in the 67th minute. It was his first career point.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Prestige in Paradise. Florida Atlantic Athletics has named its Prestige Windows & Doors Student-Athletes of the Month for August, with football's Logic Hudgens and women's basketball's Maria Myklebust receiving honors.

The monthly honors are presented to male and female Florida Atlantic student-athletes to recognize their excellence in the classroom. FAU's athletic academic staff votes on the award.

Hudgens came to Florida Atlantic in January of 2024 after playing for both Buffalo and Monroe. Hudgens, from Glen Burnie, Maryland, recently suffered an injury and will not play this season.

🔼 Black Knights in Boca. Florida Atlantic's football team returned to the practice field on Monday morning. Due to weekend rain and impending weather, they moved their session to the Hagerty Family Track Complex.

The Owls are coming off their season opener, a game in which they held Michigan State to 16 points (14 defensively), the fewest versus a P5 opponent in the program's history. Florida Atlantic used the two days' rest to review the game, make corrections, and prepare to face Army West Point on Saturday for their home opener on Sept. 7 at FAU Stadium. The Owls will celebrate Military Appreciation Day as the Black Knights come to Boca Raton.

The contest will mark the first time the two teams have met and will be the Owls' first American Athletic Conference contest of 2024.

🔼  Sweeping the Floor With the Competition. Florida Atlantic volleyball earned its third-straight sweep on Tuesday, powering past the FIU Panthers 3-0 inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

Florida Atlantic improves to 3-1 with the win, while FIU drops to 0-4 on the season.

Florida Atlantic will hit the road this weekend for the first time this season. The Owls will head to Lubbock, Texas, to compete in the Red Raider Classic hosted by Texas Tech. The Owls will begin play on Friday at noon ET against Green Bay.

🔼 Taking Its “Toal.” Senior Elyssa Toal was named the American Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week. After her performance at the 2024 Florida Atlantic Invitational, Toal becomes the first member of the cross country/track & field program to win the weekly AAC honor as well as the first Owl to win for cross country since 2022.
