Paradise Brew 1/15: A Day to Honor

Celebrating MLK in Paradise and Beyond

Good morning, Owl Nation. “If you can’t fly then run, If you can’t run then walk, If you can’t walk then crawl, But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, we pause to honor a man who moved our country and our society forward in so many ways.

As we celebrate victories, moments, and stories in each and every Brew, let us remember those who helped pave the paths before us.

This morning, we hope you enjoy this bite or, rather, sip-sized Owls Brew. (Think of it as a single shot of the Red & Blue)

We’ll be back with your Venti-sized edition on Wednesday.

🔼 Easy Like a Sunday Afternoon. The No. 24 Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team (13-4, 3-1 AAC) brought down UAB (10-6, 2-1 AAC) on Sunday afternoon for the “Red Out” game at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

Bolstered by another top-notch and efficient performance from junior guard Johnell Davis, who dropped 30 points for the second time this season, the Owls put together a strong offensive unit that saw them create and maintain a double-digit lead for the majority of the game.

“Any time you can find a way to beat those guys [UAB], it’s a good day,” said head coach Dusty May.

Some Noteworthy Stats From the Game:

  • This marks Davis' third career game of 30 points or more and second of the season

  • Vlad Goldin finished the day with 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting, putting him up to 71.8% from the field this season

  • The Owls tied their season high in blocks with five, two of them coming from Alijah Martin

Florida Atlantic will host another home game on Thursday, taking on Wichita State (8-8, 0-3 AAC) at 7pm ET.

🔼 Right As Rain. Florida Atlantic men's tennis captured their season opener over Georgia Southern 5-2 on Saturday night, playing for the first time under the lights at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center.

The match, delayed by an hour to wait for the weather to move through the area, saw the Owls capture the doubles point by recording wins on courts one and two.

FAU's second point was earned by Alberto Colas' quick work on court one: 6-0, 6-3. The match was clinched by Juan Martin Jalif, who won court four: 6-3, 6-4. The two teams would go on to play out the remaining matches to gain early season work.

The Owls will host Louisiana on Friday, Jan. 19, at 3:30pm ET.

🔼 Run a Mile in Their Shoes. The women's Florida Atlantic University track & field team began their 2024 indoor season with the Jimmy Carnes Invitational on Friday.

It was a strong opening meet for the Owls, who recorded multiple top finishes in a crowded field of runners.

QUICK HITS:

  • The mile run was an Owl's nest, with seven finishing in the top 10 out of 47 runners. Anna Rovirosa finished in second place (5:03.32), followed by, in consecutive order, Anabell Reumann (5:04.74) in fourth place, Jessica Hatch (5:06.19), Elyssa Toal (5:06.52), Jordan Stevens (5:06.94), and Leah Helms (5:07.24). Casey O'Connor rounded out the top 10 with a time of 5:14.87

  • Rovirosa was also the top finisher for the Owls in the 800m, finishing in fourth with a time of 2:17.38.

  • Promise Cross finished in fourth in the hurdles with a time of 8.82, now the ninth-best time in school history.

The Owls will return to Gainesville for the second of three trips on Friday, Jan. 19 – Saturday, Jan. 20, to compete in the RADD Florida Invitational.
